Get Scotland Trading, says new campaign

A campaign to support small businesses and recognise the impact they have on the Scottish economy has been launched by the Forum of Private Business (FPB).

The Get Scotland Trading campaign builds on the wider Get Britain Trading campaign, but is aimed exclusively at Scottish SMEs.

According to the FPB, small businesses represent 98.1 per cent of private enterprises in Scotland and account for 40.7 per cent of employment. The campaign intends to raise awareness of this valuable contribution, and push for more to be done to support these small firms.

The FPB believes that by creating the right conditions for economic growth, Scotland would see an increase in the contribution SMEs are able to make to Scotland's economy.

The manifesto focuses on three key areas; reducing business costs, boosting the local economy and investing in infrastructure.

The cost of fuel, energy and the reduction of red tape are at the top of the cost reducing list, while access to public sector contracts and protecting businesses on the local high street should help give local economies a boost. Finally, investing in infrastructure is vital for rural businesses, the manifesto claims.

Commenting, The Forum's Chief Executive, Phil Orford, said: "Scotland has its own parliament and its own unique issues and opportunities. At a macro level we can do much more to help make things better for Scotland's small businesses by customising this campaign to make it more effective and more relevant for them.

"Promoting the success of Scottish businesses despite the tough conditions is going to be an important part of this campaign. There are small firms in Scotland that are thriving and we want to shout about it."

"We will also continue to lobby and work with the Scottish Government to improve conditions for small firms. Primarily we would like to see the introduction of a small business fuel allowance to help Scottish firms that are affected more than most by high fuel prices."
